Analysts appreciate PTI-led government’s steps for welfare of overseas Pakistanis
January 11, 2022

Dr. Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economist): Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taking special care of overseas Pakistanis as they make huge contributions into Pakistan's economy. The remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis touched the three billion dollar mark recently. The Prime Minister granted overseas Pakistanis voting rights so that they could exercise their right to vote in the general elections in Pakistan. Housing is an important need and the incumbent government is trying to provide expatriate Pakistanis this important facility. The Prime Minister also took keen interest in helping the overseas Pakistanis in getting their lands retrieved from land grabbers. Besides, the PTI-led government is offering special incentives to Pakistanis abroad so that they could invest in various sectors of their home country. The four hundred kanal housing project for overseas Pakistanis will push the economy upwards as a number of industries allied with it will prosper.

Hamayun Iqbal Shami (Chairman, Pakistan Economic Forum): It is a great initiative of the government to approve the launching of a housing project on 400 kanals for overseas Pakistanis. It will boost the confidence of the overseas Pakistani on the incumbent government. The government has decided to secure the properties and provide legal assistance to all Pakistanis abroad whose property is threatened by the “land mafia". It is unfortunate that the properties of overseas Pakistanis have been grabbed by the land mafia and, in certain cases, by individuals. Through the initiative of the government, the overseas Pakistanis will have a great opportunity to invest in the country. Moreover, after the emergence of a new corona variant, the government needs to implement the balance between SoPs and the business activities. But the lockdown will badly affect the economic activities that it did in the first and second variants of the pandemic. The government must devise certain policies to satisfy the overseas Pakistanis in order to eliminate the aspects of grabbing of their properties, an inordinate delay in decision of cases, frauds in properties purchased by them, and their inability to pursue court cases from abroad.

Dr. Rasheed Ahmad Khan (IR Expert): Mediterranean Region has played a very important role historically in economics and politics. The European Union is a big trading bloc of Pakistan and Islamabad is getting numerous benefits by exporting its products to the region. The visit of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will help convey Pakistan's position on a number of issues to the leadership of Romania and Spain. The visit will be useful for Pakistan in further cementing the existing relations with two important European countries.

Najam-ul-Saqib (Former Ambassador): The visit of foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to Romania and Spain is vital in many aspects. The time is gone when we would rely on limited friends. It is the time to explore new friends across the globe and strengthen bilateral relations with these countries. Romania is an important member of the European Union and can play a key role in the economic development of Pakistan. Meanwhile, Spain is another important country and Pakistan is making all out efforts to strengthen its trade relations with it. The Foreign Minister during his visit to these important countries will discuss Afghan situation and consequences if Afghan people are not supported as the prevailing situation may lead to the worst humanitarian crises.
