Afghanistan: Freedom of press suffering severe decline under Taliban regime
June 21, 2026

In Afghanistan, freedom of the press is suffering a severe decline under the occupying Taliban regime, where speaking the truth and bringing facts to light have become a crime.

According to Reporters Without Borders, a record number of journalists have gone into exile from Afghanistan following the takeover by the Afghan Taliban regime.

A total of six hundred and seventy-seven Afghan journalists have fled their country due to persecution and threats by the regime.

The regime continues to place heavy restrictions on public and media freedoms as at least five Afghan journalists are still in Taliban custody.
