Mome Saleem: (Environment activist):
First of all, of course the climate change is an international issue with having regional consequences, currently faced by Pakistan. The developed countries have now taken the responsibility of the devastating effects of the climate changes in the developing world. But, we can't expect much from these dialogues until any action is taken, because whatever that is committed hasn't fulfilled all the times. Therefore, action oriented development matters. The developing countries are pushing themselves to run their errands, but can't do so due to the limited resources. On the other hand, the developed world has created much chaos. Now we are moving back from the fossil fuels because of the worst effects of carbon emission into the environment, and moving towards generating renewable energy. No matter what kind of difficulties come, the developed countries must come forward to help the developing world, because they have the desired resources and capacity to restore the environment. They should also train the developing countries, because we cannot stop the climate changes, but at least we can adapt such practices to minimize the damages in the future. Pakistan isn't resilient enough to restore itself, but we are moving forward with great cooperation from the developed countries and will soon observe its results. It is pertinent to mention here that, a policy should be made that imposes taxes on such countries, which emits carbon in excessive amount, there should be strict adaption and implementation of such policies to neglect the devastating situations in the future by these climatic changes.
Mr Ahmed Kamal (Chairman Federal Flood Commission):
One thing we have to understand that this is not the first incident and will not be the last with regard to the effects of climate change. The biggest reason is the temperature impact on the environment. We are and will see the consequences of climate changes due to the gradual increase in temperature on the Arabian Sea. Currently, Pakistan has faced the damages of 33 billion dollars and it will take us years to overcome such a loss. Therefore, the incumbent government has now raised voices for climate justice in front of the developed countries. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto has expressed the narrative of climate justice quite effectively by calling it as an international issue. We have to work in accordance of plantation to restore the environment in the country as well as in the world. The world is moving forward but we are the one facing its consequences. Many of the developed countries have hailed to provide the compensation for this devastating situation in the country, but haven't provided any of such financial assistance. There are talks for assisting Pakistan but no one is talking that what amount of damages we have faced and what consequences we are facing and will have to face. Therefore, we have to raise our voice for climate justice. A strong contingent has presented our narrative in the COP-27 and it will definitely bring change for the developing countries in the future.
Afia Salam (Senior Journalist):
The motive for climate justice from the South Asian countries, especially from Pakistan is one of the steps forward. This time Pakistan has raised concerns that due to the developed countries, the developing countries are facing the consequences of their growth and they can't resilient enough to contain the damages by their own. It requires financial assistance and strong resources to sustain. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto has raised the concern of climate justice, as it is the need of the hour, not just for Pakistan but for the other developing countries that have and might face its consequences. The Minister for Climatic Change Sherry Rehman should be lauded the way she presented the issue by giving the reference of the current condition in Pakistan. It is the first time a COP-27 has presented such a motion and this has been made as an agenda to be settled. Because these issues require financial mechanism and that will be made possible with a passage of time. The developed countries where not admitting it earlier, that these effects are because of them. But now by the combined efforts of the developing countries, it has been taken into consideration and a policy will be made to work in accordance to provide relief to affected countries. The resources and technologies should be provided to the developing countries, so that they can overcome such devastating situations in the future.
Javed Ali Khan (Environmentalist):
This is too early to predict any response from the developed countries, but it will definitely bring in something in the future. I was effectively engaged in the negotiations earlier but now I am not and these things definitely take time. Pakistan is a developing country and such decisions are taken by the developed countries. There was not any progress in this matter, but now due to the combined efforts of the developing countries it will definitely move forward and will definitely provide fruitful results in the future. Pakistan has faced devastating consequences of the climate changes and now has raised concerns regarding assistance from the developed world.
