Analyst hails govt for hosting IWT 2026 Int’l seminar
June 30, 2026

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert):International seminar on Indus Waters Treaty is very good and timely initiative by the government because India unilaterally abrogated treaty since last year. This treaty survived three wars between both Pakistan and India. India has made water a weapon against Pakistan just to establish its regional hegemony over Pakistan. Presence of Russian and Chinese representation in seminar is very important because both are regional and international influential players. India wants to divert water of rivers flowing towards Pakistan to its desert areas. Pakistan has born huge loss due to Indian actions; therefore Pakistan needs to take Indian water weaponization against Pakistan to international forums. We need to become more proactive and take this treaty at international forums because it is international treaty with international guarantors. Now, Pakistan has established its international authority so it must make it clear to India about Pakistan’s red lines. India has hostile designs against Pakistan since ever. This is why,   India offered funding to Afghanistan for building dam on Kabul River inside Afghanistan just to choke Pakistan. Pakistan needs to take timely action because once India constructs dam then international world sides with India due to economic strength. India wants also keep Nepal also under its hegemony which is an upper riparian nation. Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is an international treaty which enjoys backing from major international stakeholders as guarantors. Treaty was signed under the auspices of World Bank. Pakistani leadership has been making it clear to India that treaty is a matter of life and death for Pakistan. As per international charters and conventions no country can block flow of rivers, but India makes bids to divert water flow by constructing dams and canals. Now India has committed water aggression against Pakistan by announcing setting IWT in abeyance. Pakistani leadership categorically told India that any such bid would be considered as an act of war. World leaders endorse Pakistani stance on this issue. Now Pakistan has organized IWT 2026 Seminar to highlight Indian violations of treaty.
