Pakistan has finalized its National Biodiversity Targets under the global framework of the International Convention on Biological Diversity.

The initiative by Ministry of Climate Change marks a significant milestone in the country’s commitments to global biodiversity conservation.

The targets were finalized during a two-day high-level meeting in Islamabad, attended by representatives from federal ministries, provincial environmental, forestry, and wildlife departments, academic institutions, and development partners.

The meeting was chaired by the Ministry Secretary, with participation from Additional Secretary Dr. Saad Khan, Director Biodiversity Naeem Ashraf Raja, and Wildlife Conservator Samar Hussain Khan.

According to Ministry spokesperson and biodiversity expert Muhammad Saleem Sheikh, the targets were developed after extensive consultations with government and non-government stakeholders to align Pakistan’s biodiversity priorities with both environmental needs and development goals.

The finalized targets include protection of 30 percent of land and sea areas, control of invasive species, and sustainable management of resources by 2030.

They also incorporate actionable measures, such as developing legal and administrative policies to monitor the impact of business and development activities on biodiversity.
