Uzbekistan has thwarted a cross-border drug smuggling attempt after intercepting a drone carrying over two kilograms of opium from Afghanistan.

According to Uzbek media, unknown individuals from Afghan territory attempted to send narcotics into Uzbekistan by attaching them to a drone.

The State Security Service and Border Troops detected the suspicious drone in time during a joint operation while it was still airborne. The security forces seized the drone and recovered the opium.

According to Uzbek media, law enforcement agencies have registered a criminal case and launched an investigation to identify the drone's launch site, the intended recipient and the facilitators involved.
