
The Sugar Advisory Board has announced the start of sugar crushing season across the country from 15th of this month.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Board in Islamabad today, with Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the decision has been taken after consultations with all provinces and the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association.
He said the decision will help ensure that sugarcane growers do not face any difficulties and will guarantee the smooth and timely supply of sugar in the market.
He added that government is making all decisions in the best interest of farmers to prevent their exploitation.
The Minister said payment of dues to the farmers will be ensured before the commencement of crushing.
He said strict action will be taken against any sugar mill that fails to start crushing on the prescribed date.
Rana Tanveer Hussain directed provincial authorities to ensure strict monitoring of all sugar mills to safeguard the rights of farmers.
The participants of the meeting welcomed the decision and appreciated the government's timely intervention.
