June 05, 2023

Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar (Former Ambassador) Pakistan and Iraq belonged to two different blocks. Pakistan remained tilted towards the conservative Arab countries whereas Iraq was leading the radical Arab countries. After 1990, things have changed in Iraq and Kuwait. Basically Saddam Hussain remained the main hurdle in the economic uplift of Iraq. With the fall of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussain’s regime in 2003, Pakistan provided relative support for Iraq’s new regime. Over the past two decades, various officials have traveled to the two countries, but the relationship has been smooth. Pakistan distanced itself from the Iraqi block but the recent visit of the Foreign Minister to Iraq is absolutely important. Pakistan is working on the policy to maintain balanced relations with all other countries. Iraq is the heart of the Arab world and is strategically important because of many important places of Islamic history.
