Export-led development top priority of govt: PM

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said achieving export-led development targets is top priority of the government.

He was chairing a review meeting in Islamabad today on overall development of the national economy and implementation of National Tariff Policy.

The Prime Minister said active and transparent performance of the National Tariff Commission is inevitable for the promotion of domestic industry, trade and investment.

He said the National Tariff Commission should play its proactive role to facilitate investors and industrialists.

The Prime Minister directed that the National Tariff Commission should be innovated by employing the best practices and modern technology prevalent in the world, including information technology and artificial intelligence.

A detailed briefing was given in the meeting on implementation of the National Tariff Policy 2025-30.

It was briefed that under the National Tariff Policy 2025-30, tariffs will be reduced in phases for various sectors with the aim to achieve the targets of export-led economic growth.

The meeting was also briefed that duties imposed on reefer containers and semi-trailers will be abolished for the development and promotion of the logistics sector. Similarly, customs duties are being decreased on specialized vehicles and machinery with a view to promoting the construction sector.

Moreover, customs duties will be eliminated on raw materials, especially raw materials used in cancer drugs, to facilitate the pharmaceutical sector.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar and relevant senior government officials.
