Deep-rooted structural reforms put economy back on track: PM
September 29, 2026

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today attended the Market Open Ceremony at the London Stock Exchange.

A ceremony was also held to mark the listing of Pakistan's three-billion-dollar dual-tranche Eurobonds.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan can attract foreign investment as the country offers opportunities for profitable, mutually beneficial, safe and secure investments.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the country's latest three-billion-dollar Eurobond is a clear manifestation of the government's efforts to strengthen the economy.

He said deep-rooted structural reforms, digitisation of the economy and other necessary measures have helped put the economy back on track.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan seeks guidance from international financial markets to further enhance their role in the country's economy, particularly through investment rather than sovereign debt alone.

He said the government is also moving ahead with the privatisation of state-owned enterprises.

Shehbaz Sharif said the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines and First Women Bank has already been successfully undertaken, while the government is moving towards transferring several other state enterprises to the private sector.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan, like other emerging economies, is facing challenges arising from the Gulf crisis, while also playing its role as a peacemaker to mediate between the United States and Iran. He expressed the hope that these efforts would continue until a safer situation is achieved.

He also invited London Stock Exchange Group Chief Executive Officer David Schwimmer to visit Pakistan and said he would be warmly welcomed in the country.

It is pertinent to mention that Shehbaz Sharif is the first Prime Minister of Pakistan to have the honour of opening trading at the London Stock Exchange.

His participation in the Market Open Ceremony reflects growing financial ties between Pakistan and key financial institutions in London.

The Market Open Ceremony is held at the London Stock Exchange headquarters at Paternoster Square and formally marks the beginning of the trading day in London.

Earlier, upon arrival, the Chief Executive Officer of the London Stock Exchange Group, David Schwimmer, and senior officials of the London Stock Exchange Group welcomed the Prime Minister.
