Minister of State for Law and Justice Aqeel Malik has said that, under the Constitution, only the federal government can appoint officers of the Police Service of Pakistan.

He was addressing a news conference alongside Prime Minister’s Coordinator Ikhtiar Wali Khan in Islamabad today.

The Minister of State said the proposed amendment to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act is aimed at politicizing the police force in the province.

He said a provincial government cannot unilaterally appoint officers of the Police Service of Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Ikhtiar Wali Khan said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government intends to use the police to create unrest and anarchy in the province.
