August 22, 2026

Dredging operations have begun at Karachi Port, marking a major step towards promoting Pakistan’s maritime capability and trade.

National Dredging and Marine Services has officially started dredging operations at Karachi Port following the signing of a dredging agreement between NDMS and Karachi Port Trust.

Dredging refers to the removal of accumulated silt, sand and mud from the bottom of ports to maintain the required depth where large ships can anchor.

NDMS is promoting local dredging capacity in partnership with NLC, Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port Authorities.

NDMS is working to increase local dredging capacity on the recommendations of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms.

NDMS will carry out dredging operations in Karachi Harbor Approach Channel, Tipu Sultan Channel and South Wharf Basin.

Dredging operations will make the movement of large ships more efficient while maintaining the depth of Karachi Port’s passages.

The local dredging facility will reduce dependence on foreign companies, improve port operations efficiency and save valuable foreign exchange.
