Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed to take every possible step for uplift of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and align it with international standards.   

He issued these directives while chairing a review meeting in Islamabad today regarding implementation of reforms in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The meeting reviewed the PIMS inquiry report and the performance audit of the hospital conducted by the Ministry of National Health.

The Prime Minister directed to complete measures for uplift of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences within three months including improvement of its fire safety system and aligning it with international standards in light of the recommendations of the inquiry report.

He instructed to ensure implementation of the short-term measures proposed in the inquiry report within the next three months.

Shehbaz Sharif directed to consult Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute for assistance and suggestions regarding the fire safety system.

He further directed to consider the recommendations contained in the WHO report and ensure its implementation.

The Prime Minister instructed to include measures in the roadmap to ensure the provision of medicines and facilities at the hospital entirely free of cost along with appointment of workforce with a strong professional reputation for the improvement of PIMS.

Shehbaz Sharif directed to formulate a comprehensive roadmap based on long-term measures to improve the PIMS.

He also directed for conducting an audit of Polyclinic Hospital to remove irregularities and evolving an action plan for its revamping.

The Prime Minister instructed the Capital Development Authority to ensure implementation of fire safety measures in all government and private hospitals in the Federal Capital.

He said the CDA and all relevant institutions should carry out the fire safety audit of government and private buildings and implement fire safety measures.

During the meeting, the Ministry of National Health Services briefed the participants on the steps taken for the improvement of PIMS and aligning it with international standard.

It was briefed that out of the indicators examined in the performance audit of PIMS, only thirty-nine point seven percent compliance was found as compared to the acceptable target of ninety percent.

The meeting was also informed that implementation on thirty-seven proposed measures is being ensured immediately in light of the inquiry report.

The meeting was briefed about short-term, medium-term and long-term measures to uplift PIMS.

Federal Ministers Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, and other relevant senior officials attended the meeting.
