Pakistan vows to promote Buddha’s message of peace
May 13, 2026

Pakistan has reaffirmed pledge to continue promoting Buddha’s universal message of peace, harmony, and tranquility in cooperation with the international community.

This was stated by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, while addressing International Day of Vesak 2026 at the United Nations.

He highlighted Pakistan’s deep historical connection with Buddhism, saying that Buddhist pilgrims and scholars continue to visit sites such as Taxila, Swat, and Takht-e-Bahi.

Asim Iftikhar said Vesak reflects Buddha’s enduring message of peace, compassion, and mindfulness, which remains highly relevant amid growing global conflicts and divisions.

The Permanent Representative said Buddhism’s connection with Pakistan is rooted in the ancient land of Gandhara, which remains deeply woven into Pakistan’s socio-cultural fabric and continues to shape the country’s pluralistic and progressive outlook.

He said this heritage also reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence, including through the UN General Assembly resolution on promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue and cooperation for peace, jointly tabled by the Philippines and Pakistan.
