Broadening tax net foremost priority of Govt: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that broadening of tax net is the foremost priority of the government as it wants to reduce the tax burden on common man by decreasing the tax ratio.

He expressed these views while presiding over a review meeting on increasing the tax net and tax collection of the Federal Board of Revenue in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of the government's economic team for rapidly heading toward achieving FBR's revenue targets during the current financial year.

He directed that the individuals and sectors capable of paying taxes must be brought into the tax net.

Shehbaz Sharif directed the relevant authorities to take strict action against individuals and sectors involved in tax evasion.

He also instructed for strict accountability of officers and personnel assisting the tax evaders and to utilize modern technology to stop tax evasion.

The Prime Minister also directed to complete the digital monitoring of cement and other sectors by next month.

He also instructed to expedite efforts in collaboration with the provinces to increase tax revenue from the tobacco sector.

He directed to ensure the recovery of the nation's money by effectively pursuing the pending tax-related cases.

The Prime Minister said the national economy is stable and heading toward further progress. He called for collective efforts for country's development.

During the briefing, the participants were apprised that the complete implementation of the Track and Trace System at cement plants nationwide led to a significant increase of billions of rupees in tax revenue.

Moreover, tax collection has increased by thirty five percent from November 2024 to April 2025 with the implementation of this system in the sugar industry.

The meeting was further informed that tax collection target equivalent to ten point six of GDP will be attained as a result of reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue.
