UN, EU & US calls for probe into assassination of Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Aqleh

The United Nations, European Union and the United States have called for an independent and transparent probe into the assassination of Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Aqleh. In a statement, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is appalled by the incident and called for an independent and transparent investigation into the shooting to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

He stressed that journalists must never be the target of violence. Meanwhile, the UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said also urged for a probe.

One other hand, the United States envoy to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, called for the killing to be transparently investigated.

Media Watchdogs like Reporters Without Borders and International Federation of Journalists have also condemned the killing of Abu Aqleh and pledged to submit a case to the International criminal Court to investigate the systemic targeting of Palestinian reporters by Israeli forces.

Meanwhile, a state service for 51-year-old martyred Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh took place in Ramallah today. Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahmoud Abbas said they will go to the International Criminal Court to seek justice.

He rejected the joint investigation with Israel and held the Israeli government fully responsible for the assassination of Abu Akleh.
