Govt announces new auto policy focusing on affordable, electric vehicles
November 07, 2026

The federal government has announced a new auto policy with a particular focus on affordable vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs).

The key features of the policy were outlined by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, during a news conference in Islamabad today, alongside Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar.

Haroon Akhtar said the policy is based on six key pillars: affordable vehicles, particularly for the middle and lower-middle classes; boosting exports; promoting electric vehicles; increasing localization; improving vehicle safety; and ensuring transparency.

He said import duties have been reduced to lower vehicle manufacturing costs, which would help make locally manufactured, affordable vehicles more accessible, especially to low-income consumers.

He added that reducing the prices of vehicles below 1300cc was a special priority of the Prime Minister.

The adviser further highlighted that specific measures have been introduced to strengthen localization and promote automobile exports. The government has set an export target of 6 billion dollars over the next five years for automobile-related products.

Speaking at the news conference, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the initiative as a comprehensive policy developed in consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

He said benefiting the low-income segments of society was among the government's top priorities under the policy, in line with the Prime Minister's directives.

Tarar also emphasized that electric vehicles are not only affordable but also environmentally friendly.
