November 05, 2026

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has termed fake and unverified news one of the biggest challenges of the present era, stressing the need for effective mechanisms to verify information before its dissemination.

He was addressing the 29th Sustainable Development Conference, organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, in Islamabad today.

The Minister said everyone is facing the challenge of fake news, making it essential to establish effective mechanisms for verifying information.

He said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has established a Digital Communication Department to ensure the dissemination of verified information to the relevant audiences.

Emphasising the need for the positive use of artificial intelligence, Attaullah Tarar said AI labelling, along with appropriate regulatory and legal frameworks, is essential for social media content.

He said the advent of electronic media has led to the development of regulatory frameworks and editorial systems. He added that a similar regulatory framework is also necessary for social media platforms.

The Minister said technology has become indispensable in every sphere of life, while digital media channels are expanding their presence on social media platforms.

He said the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has been established to deal with cybercrimes, while laws have also been strengthened to prevent offences in the digital domain.

Clarifying the government's position on freedom of expression, Attaullah Tarar said there are no restrictions on freedom of speech. However, no one can be allowed to harm others in the name of freedom of expression.

He said the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act applies only to electronic crimes.

Referring to Marka-e-Haq, the Minister said Pakistan had upheld the truth despite the spread of fake and fabricated news by India. He appreciated the responsible role played by Pakistani media in responding to misinformation circulated by Indian media.

He said Generation Z demonstrated remarkable skills on social media during Marka-e-Haq.

Attaullah Tarar emphasised the need to introduce specialised courses in digital media and raise public awareness about the misuse of social media and artificial intelligence.

Highlighting the importance of sustainable development in ensuring a better future for present and coming generations, he said the government is working with the United Nations Development Programme to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
