Afghanistan: Taliban regime exploiting its own people to sustain illegal rule
January 05, 2026

In Afghanistan, Taliban regime is exploiting its own people to sustain the illegal rule through extortion, seizure of property and looting of natural resources.

According to the Afghan newspaper Hasht-e Subh, Taliban have intensified their seizure of gold mines in the northeastern provinces of Afghanistan.

Hasht-e-Subh reported that Taliban elements evict owners and take control wherever they receive information about a gold mine.

The Afghan newspaper stated that In Badakhshan, Takhar and Farah, local people are not being issued permits to extract gold, whereas Taliban supporters are allowed to seize mines in exchange for a fixed share.

According to the report, revenue from gold mines for the Taliban has exceeded twenty five million dollars per month.

Analysts said that plundering of natural resources is pushing Afghanistan further into poverty and economic crisis.

Afghan observers said the battle for control over natural resources has become a new tension point between powerful and extremist groups.
