The Petroleum Division has prepared a roadmap for deregulation of the gas sector with the technical support of the World Bank.

It was prepared at a meeting regarding gas sector reforms, chaired by Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and attended by the World Bank Country Director.

Reorganization and unbundling of Sui companies are part of the reform plan, which envisages separating the transmission, distribution, and energy businesses of these companies.

Under the roadmap, the subsidy system will be restructured so that only deserving consumers can receive targeted relief.

The government will make phased progress towards market-clearing prices in the gas market.

The roadmap will be presented to the Prime Minister for approval this month, following which its phased implementation will start.

Speaking on the occasion, Ali Pervaiz Malik said gas sector reforms will strengthen energy security and ensure transparency in prices.

He said the reforms will ensure the financial stability of Sui companies and create new employment opportunities.

He said the government aims to establish a competitive, transparent, and efficient market in the gas sector.

The Minister said the role of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority will be further strengthened to ensure supervision of the competitive gas market.

He said new opportunities will be created for private sector investment and participation in the gas sector.
