July 04, 2025

National Disaster Management Authority has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood alert for the glaciated regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in view of significant rise in temperatures and an upcoming weather system in northern Pakistan.

According to the alert, sudden GLOF events may occur during the current and coming week.

NDMA has advised all concerned federal ministries and departments, respective provincial governments, municipal administrations, and civic agencies to remain on high alert and ensure full preparedness.

Emergency response equipment must be preplaced at strategic locations for timely restoration of any obstructed or damaged routes.

NDMA has also emphasized public awareness campaigns in at-risk areas to alert citizens about the dangers of GLOFs.

Communities have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near nullahs, streams, and fast-flowing water channels, avoid crossing such areas by vehicle. Law enforcement agencies and traffic police will guide travelers regarding potential hazards, while National Highway and Motorway Police and other relevant authorities will coordinate traffic management and route redirection in case of emergencies.

Tourists are strongly advised to avoid trekking in glacier-prone regions, and refrain from taking pictures or visiting glaciers to avoid any untoward incidents.

NDMA has urged the public to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and download the Pakistan NDMA Disaster Alert App for timely updates and safety guidance.
