The forty-seventh death anniversary of folk singer Alam Lohar is being observed today.

Born in 1928 in a village near Gujrat, Alam Lohar was known for his soulful renditions of Waris Shah's Heer, which he had memorized in different styles and variations.

He started his career as a child artist with Radio Pakistan.

He recorded his first album at the age of thirteen and became one of Pakistan's most successful singers of the 1970s.

Alam Lohar was also honoured with Pride of Performance Award in 1979.

He died on this day in 1979 in Lahore.
