The 46th death anniversary of Pakistan's renowned Sarangi player Ustad Hamid Hussain Khan is being observed today.

Ustad Hamid Hussain Khan was born in Moradabad, British India. His ancestors had long been associated with the royal court of the Rampur State. In musical circles, this family was known as the "Rampur Gharana".

Ustad Hamid Hussain Khan received his musical training from his maternal grandfather, Ustad Haider Bakhsh Khan, and his father, Ustad Abid Hussain Khan, while he learned to play the sarangi from his maternal uncle, Ustad Ali Jan Khan.

Ustad Hamid Hussain Khan was associated with both Radio Pakistan and All India Radio.

He showcased his artistry not only across the subcontinent but also in other parts of the world, where he earned great acclaim.

He died on this day in Karachi in 1980.
