The 74th death anniversary of the architect and builder of modern Karachi, Jamshed Nusserwanjee, is being observed today.

He had the honour of being elected as the first mayor of Karachi and served from 1922 to 1933.

During his tenure as mayor, Karachi transformed from a fishing village into a well-planned city and witnessed economic and social development.

Jamshed Nusserwanjee devised numerous plans for the expansion of Karachi.  He divided the city into various wards, establishing a primary school, a dispensary, and a maternity home in each ward. He also established fire brigade and ambulance services.

Karachi's famous Jamshed Road is named after him. His immense contribution earned him the title of "Builder of Modern Karachi."

Jamshed Nusserwanjee died on this day in 1952.
