UN Security Council holding emergency meeting today to discuss evolving situation in Afghanistan

An emergency meeting of the UN envoys of permanent members of Security Council are holding an emergency meeting on the situation in Afghanistan today (Monday).

France and Britain have decided to submit a resolution to the meeting, proposing a safe zone in Kabul, to protect people trying to leave Afghanistan and allow humanitarian operations to continue.

The US military forces, which guard the airport in Kabul, are due to withdraw by Tuesday deadline set by President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, the United States will host a virtual meeting of Foreign ministers from several countries today to discuss their next steps in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said as the evacuation from Kabul enters its final day, the United States will host the meeting of key partners in Afghanistan.

Representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Qatar, the European Union and NATO will attend the meeting.
