Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has warned that the world is drifting into a dangerous era of militarised politics and appealed to Moscow and Washington to sit down for urgent nuclear arms control talks.

Talking to daily newspaper Izvestia, he said there are dangerous trends of disregard for international law and the militarization of world politics.

His remarks came after the United States formally pulled out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia in August.
