Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that a security bloc led by Moscow and Beijing should take the lead in ensuring the Taliban kept its promises on preventing terrorism and drug trafficking.

He was speaking via video link at a summit of the eight-member Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of Heads of State meeting in Tajikistan.

Meanwhile, addressing the joint Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-Collective Security Treaty Organisation summit, the Russian President said most of the costs for the post-conflict reconstruction of Afghanistan should be covered by the United States and NATO countries, which are directly responsible for the dire consequences of their long-term presence in the country.
