European Union lawmakers have approved German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen's appointment as president of the European Commission.

According to media reports, she became the first woman on this post after securing 383 votes in the 751-seat parliament secret ballot and will take over from Jean-Claude Juncker on first November this year.
