Senate continued discussion on budget 2026-27

Senate resumed its session at the Parliament House in Islamabad today (Monday) with Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair.

Leader of Opposition in the Senate Raja Nasir Abbas opened discussion on the budget for next fiscal year.

He stressed the need for reforms focused on the welfare of the common man and emphasized that government measures should aim to empower the youth economically.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate also criticized the Petroleum Development Levy, imposed on petroleum products.

Noor Alam Khan welcomed recent diplomatic engagements and appreciated Pakistan’s leadership role in promoting peace and regional stability.

Hafeez-ud-Din said  high energy costs, circular debt and policy inconsistencies continue to pose challenges to industrial growth, urging comprehensive reforms to ensure stability and investor confidence.

Shahram Khan called for stronger implementation of policies to translate economic claims into tangible relief for citizens.

Sardar Nabil Ahmed Gabol noted that debt servicing and inflation continue to limit development spending, and urged policymakers to prioritise relief for the common man through improved financial management.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate appreciated the role played by Pakistan in ending war between the United States and Iran.

Participating in the discussion, Sherry Rehman welcomed the removal of GST on women's hygiene products and contraceptives. She called for reforms in State-Owned Enterprises.

Mohsin Aziz said there is a decline in foreign direct investment and exports.

Shahadat Awan said though the budget of Benazir Income Support Program has been enhanced, it should be further increased in view of its impact on the poor segments of society.

Jam Muhammad Buledi voiced concerns over reliance on foreign loans.

Dilawar Khan said the budget carries nothing for the public.

Sarmad Ali expressed the confidence that the benefits of US-Iran peace agreement will reach the common man in the form of a reduction in the prices of petroleum products.

Faisal Javed criticized the government for not reducing the petroleum prices.

Afnan Ullah Khan mentioned the improvement in economic indicators, including a reduction in inflation and an increase in GDP growth rate.

Others who spoke on the occasion include Aon Abbas, Nasir Butt, Aimal Wali Khan, and Kamran Murtaza.

The House will now meet tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
