Fifty-seven people have been killed when a ship from Gambia carrying over one hundred and fifty migrants sank off the coast of Mauritania.

The U.N. migration agency said this incident is one of the deadliest since attempts became scarcer when Spain stepped up patrols in the mid-2000s.
