Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Ejaz Awan (Defense Analyst): It is a big day in the history of Pakistan as on this day Pakistan defeated an enemy that was much bigger in size and military power. At that time, Pakistan was not well equipped as far as modern technology was concerned. The United States imposed sanctions on both the countries that added to our difficulties. Pakistanis managed to thwart the numerically superior Indian army at Chawinda. The Battle of Chawinda was one of the largest tank battles after the Second World War. The Indian forces had to withdraw and faced historic defeat. M M Alam is credited for having downed five Indian jets in under a minute which is a world record. All the forces of Pakistan including Air force, Army and Pak Navy played a vital role in defeating India in 1965 war. As compared to that time, Pakistan is equipped with modern weapons. We have advanced aircraft and missile systems and we are also indigenously manufacturing tanks. Pakistan developed its conventional and nuclear infrastructure when it was under severe US and Western sanctions. China is supporting Pakistan in acquiring modern military technology to confront the threat from India.
