Analysts hail Pakistan’s role to avert a humanitarian crisis in neighboring Afghanistan
November 19, 2021

Naveed Akbar (Senior Analyst): Pakistan has urged the world time and again to support the current Afghan dispensation in order to avert a humanitarian crisis in the country. Unfortunately, the interim government in Afghanistan does not include women and minority leaders. Rather, it has some members who are included in the UN Sanctions List. The global banking system being under the influence of the United States is not willing to work in Afghanistan. The Afghan people are in dire need of financial assistance and it is high time for world powers and the United Nations to provide aid to Afghanistan's government at the earliest. Afghanistan could descend into another civil war if the West fails to engage with the Taliban and does not support the Afghan people in this critical time.

Nadeem Raza (IR Expert): Peace and stability of the region is directly linked with the peace and stability in Afghanistan. If uncertainty and instability prevails in the land-locked country then the West will also be affected by the consequences. Afghanistan remained in a state of war for four decades and many generations sacrificed their lives during this era. Now Afghan people are hoping for the bloodshed to come to an end. But, unfortunately, the west and the world powers are not supporting the Afghan people. The United States has frozen the assets of Afghanistan that is resulting in difficulties for the newly formed Afghan government to run its affairs. Although, the Taliban government promised not to allow Afghanistan to become a base for terrorists who could threaten the West, the international response is still awaited. It is obvious that the attitude and approach of Taliban is different from their previous rule.

Brig. (Retd.) Said Nazir (Defense Analyst): The United States signed an agreement after which the two decades long war in Afghanistan came to an end. Now the regional stakeholders are making collective efforts for peace and stability. Taliban after coming into power announced general amnesty even for their enemies. On the other hand, the United States after the withdrawal froze the accounts of the Afghan government, which is a violation of US-Taliban agreements. A massive and worsening humanitarian crisis looming over the war-ravaged country is another challenge. Pakistan is already hosting nearly four million Afghan refugees and cannot afford another major crisis on its borders if there is an influx of refugees. Pakistan has repeatedly called upon the world to engage with the Taliban government to avert the collapse of Afghan structures.
