UN appeals for displaced Afghans in Europe
December 14, 2019

United Nations has appealed for intensified support for displaced Afghans saying that Afghans are the single largest group of asylum seekers arriving in Europe.

Talking to media in Geneva, a spokesperson for UNHCR, Babar Baloch, said that seven hundred thousand migrants arrived in Eastern Mediterranean so far this year out of which thirty-seven percent had been Afghans.

He said Afghans represent the longest displaced and the longest disposed population under UNHCR's mandate worldwide.

According to UNHCR, an overwhelming majority of some ninety percent of Afghan refugees remain in Pakistan and Iran.
