President urges Int'l community to take steps to counter illicit flows of money

President Dr Arif Alvi has emphasized on effective implementation of law, recovery of looted money and conviction of corrupt elements for complete elimination of corruption from the country.

Addressing a ceremony in connection with International Anti-Corruption Day in Islamabad today (Thursday), he said speedy justice in corruption cases will enhance people's confidence in the judiciary.

The President asked all segments of the society to play their role in curbing corrupt practices in the country. He said role of media is also vital in exposing these elements.

The President called upon the international community to take steps to counter illicit flows of money, and said that stolen assets of developing countries must be returned. He said there is need in improve international cooperation to bring perpetrators of financial crimes to justice. He said no compromise would be made on promoting the soft image of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman National Accountability Bureau Javed Iqbal said the bureau has so far convicted 1194 culprits while recovered total 821 billion rupees from corrupt elements. He said 520 billion rupees have been recovered during last four years.

Country Representative of UNODC in Pakistan Jeremy Milsom read out the message of the United National Secretary General on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day.

The President distributed appreciation certificates among best investigators, best prosecutors and best officers of the NAB during the ceremony.
