Devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria; Whole world saddened over huge loss of lives
February 06, 2023

Mahr Sahibzad Khan (DG, Regional Meteorological Centre):  Earthquakes are usually caused when underground rock suddenly breaks and there is rapid motion along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake.  Today’s earthquake of 7.8 magnitude at richter scale hit cities of Turkiye and Syria Its epicenter was 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi in  Gaziantep province with depth of 24.1 kilometers resulting in massive destruction. Moreover, over 40 aftershocks have been observed there. The underground plates will take time to settle so there will be more aftershocks in Turkiye.

Dr. Rasheed Ahmed Khan (Political Analyst):  There should be no politics on natural disasters and every country needs to support the other country affected by the natural disaster keeping behind their political differences. The international community, the United Nations and the world organizations must come forward to support Turkiye and Syria in this difficult time. The world capitals must send medical aids and health experts to Turkiye and Syria to provide relief to the affected people. The infrastructure has been destroyed and the world must move forward to support the earthquake-hit countries in this regard.
