Modi's ruling party loses crucial Indian state election

In India, the incumbent chief minister's party in West Bengal state has defeated Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party in a state election held amid the coronavirus pandemic surged to crisis levels.

Elections also went ahead in Assam, Tamil Nadu and Kerala states as well as the territory of Puducherry.

BJP held power in the north-eastern state of Assam but failed to make major gains elsewhere.
