In Occupied Kashmir, people in the Kashmir Valley continue to observe civil disobedience to protest Indian occupation and its August 5 illegal and unilateral decisions. As part of this movement, business activities continue to remain suspended across the Valley except for a brief period in the morning and evening. Valley’s schools, colleges and offices also wear a deserted look.

Dr. Muhammad Nazim Rahim, Senior Analyst International Affairs

Indian government’s abusive tactics and violations of basic human rights have increased support and recruits for militant groups in occupied Kashmir.

This was stated by US-based human rights watchdog in its written statement to the US Congress. Human Rights Watch pointed out that India has used excessive force to respond to protests by Kashmiri.

Calling media an important part of state, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the role of international and Pakistani media proved exemplary in highlighting the Pakistani stance on Kashmir issue.

1.5 million Kashmiri students remain out of school. Virtually all private schools are closed, and most government schools are shut, one of the clearest signs of the fear that has gripped Kashmir since the Indian government locked down the disputed territory and separatist militants began carrying out attacks to disrupt its control.

The Indian government wants students to return, and teachers at the few open schools are reporting for duty. But their students are not: Officials estimate attendance at those schools to be around three percent.

Business activities continue to remain suspended across the Valley except for a brief period in the morning and evening. Valley’s schools, colleges and offices also wear a deserted look.

While public transport remains by and large off the roads in the Valley, partial movement of some passenger vehicles is seen on few routes of Srinagar city.

This generation of Kashmiri children has been among the hardest hit. They have known nothing but conflict. For the past 10 years, huge protests and clashes keep erupting. Many young people have seen friends killed, maimed or hauled off by security forces. Their schools are constantly closing, sometimes for months at a time.

Rizwan Abbasi (Expert Kashmir Affairs, Studio Analyst)

Uneasy calm and uncertainty continue to prevail in the Valley and Muslim majority areas of Jammu and Ladakh regions as India-imposed unprecedented military lockdown and communications clampdown entered 108th running day, today.

Restrictions under Section 144 are enforced amid heightened military presence. Indian forces arrested four youth during a cordon and search operation in Arihal area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir has smoldered for decades, at times flaring into major disruption to life in the valley.
