Posted Date: 10th September, 2012 Last updated at 00:00 PSTSpeakers warn against rampant pesticide useSpeakers at a seminar have emphasized that use of pesticides is not only harmful to humans and the environment but also might impact our exports in the long runThis was the consensus that emerged at a briefing on "Pesticide Residue in Exportable Horticulture Crops" organized by Pakistan Agriculture Research Council in collaboration with UN's Food and Agriculture Organization in Islamabad on Monday.In his opening remarks FAO representative in Pakistan Dr. Kevin Gallagher said land available for production has been decreasing and strenuous efforts are needed to preserve it.
Director NARC Dr. Ashiq Mohammad‚ in his presentation said some main dangers of pesticides are contamination of food chain and aquatic systems‚ loss of biodiversity and development of pest resistance.
Dr. Ali Abbas Qazilbash of United Nations Industrial Development Organization said in Pakistan pesticide use is rampant not only in cash crops like cotton but also in fruits and vegetables.
