Dr. Khurram Iqbal (IR Expert): The visit of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to Sri Lanka and meeting with newly elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa would help cement the ties between two countries. In the last regime, Pak-Sri Lanka relations were not as strong as they should have been. It is expected that Gotabaya Rajapaksa will restore the strategic depth in Pak-Sri Lanka relations. In past, there were conscious efforts to steer Sri Lanka away from Chinese developmentprojects under OBOR initiative. It was Gotabaya Rajapaksa who brought the Chinese investment in Sri Lanka and he will definitely pave the way for smooth implementation of OBOR initiative. India will be uncomfortable with newly elected Sri Lankan President. The volume of Chinese investment is much higher than India promised to invest in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has supported Pakistan on a numberof issues including Kashmir dispute. Sri Lanka could support Pakistan reconstruct its tourism structure. I am hopeful for the new beginning of Pak-Sri Lanka relations and looking forward for constructive development in this regard.
