Hamayun Iqbal Shami (Chairman, Pakistan Economic Forum):
The landmark of the budget is related to the idea of social protection for which the government has allocated over 200 billion rupees. The political parties should avoid playing politics on this great initiative taken by the government. Another good development is that the government has encouraged direct taxes and discouraged indirect taxes. The government has removed tax relief that was introduced by the previous governments for the salaried class and increased the maximum rate of income tax to 35 per cent. No one can deny the reality that the tax revenues enable governments to build infrastructure, deliver public services, and enforce law and order which is essential for economic growth.
