In Bangladesh‚ hundreds of police have cordoned off the headquarters of country's main opposition party in Dhaka and used water cannons to disperse anti-government activists in a bid to prevent a mass rally.



The opposition is calling on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to cancel next month's elections.



Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to address the rally later today in defiance of a government ban on large political gatherings.



Local media reports that more than 650 people have been detained since Friday.
