Nawaz Sharif steps down as Prime Minister following Panama judgment.
A five-member Larger Bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, pronounced its unanimous verdict in Islamabad. Election Commission of Pakistan has de-notified Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as member of the National Assembly from NA-120 Lahore-III with immediate effect. The Commission issued de-notification following his disqualification by the Supreme Court.
Nawaz Sharif has stepped down as Prime Minister of the country following the judgment of the Supreme Court in Panama Papers case. Giving his reaction on the judgment PML-N spokesperson says despite reservations regarding different phases of the Panama case proceedings, the decision of the apex court will be implemented. Addressing a new conference in Islamabad, PML-N leaders says Nawaz Sharif is disqualified not for committing any corruption, but on the basis of not accepting money from his son.
Khawaja Naveed (Legal Expert):
This was expected and legally-correct decision. PML-N was not expecting any such decision against the Prime Minister. Under article 184-(3), Supreme Court can adjudicate upon matters of public interest. However, there should not be discriminatory behavior against anyone. Hopefully, Shahbaz Sharif will complete the targets set by Nawaz Sharif. It is unfortunate that elected prime ministers have never been allowed to complete their constitutional tenure in Pakistan.
Rauf Tahir (Journalist):
This is an expected decision announced by the Supreme Court. Nawaz Sharif is an experienced leader in this entire region. We accept decision given by Supreme Court, but fair criticism can be made on the judgment. The formation of JIT raises many questions. It is unfair to disqualify the leader of the largest party of Pakistan. Many legal experts are raising questions on the decision. The decision can become a political asset of PML-N.
