President Mamnoon Hussain today launched the Building Code of Pakistan: Fire Safety Provisions at a ceremony in Islamabad.

The code envisaging measures for protection of buildings from fires has been framed jointly by National Disaster Management Authority and Pakistan Engineering Council.

Addressing the ceremony, President Mamnoon Hussain called for measures to improve safety of old buildings and congested areas.

The President pointed out that the code would be applicable to new buildings but there are more risks of fire in old and dilapidated buildings due to hanging electricity wires and other cables in areas of high population density. He was confident that the relevant departments will also pay attention to ensure protection of these facilities as well.

Mamnoon Hussain expressed satisfaction that the building code has been prepared keeping in view our local conditions and environment which  would ensure it success. He hoped that process of further improving these codes would continue.

Mamnoon Hussain urged the relevant institutions to ensure implementation of the code and raise awareness amongst the people through the media about the utility of such laws.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain appreciated the work put in by the experts of  NDMA and  Pakistan Engineering Council for the formulation of the code. He said this will go a long way in saving the people and buildings from the hazards of fire.
