Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has called upon parliamentary leaders to play role in stopping horse-trading before the upcoming Senate elections.

Addressing a meeting with Parliamentary leaders in Islamabad on Friday, he said we have a joint obligation to check this corrupt practice of buying votes with money and ensure sanctity of the Upper House.

Speaking in Radio Pakistan’s Nuqta-e-Nazar program, legal expert S.M. Zafar said: “Government has been making efforts to ensure transparency in Senate Elections. Every member has right to cast its vote in favor of any candidate. Parliamentary leaders should play a positive role in this regard. PM has been taking personal interest to stop Horse Trading in Senate Elections.”

Senator Tanveer-ul-Haq Thanvi said: “If a candidate spent money to become a senator, the after being a senator he will start focusing on the recovery of his amount. All political parties have agreed on to stop Horse Trading at any cost so that members of the house could perform their duties in a better way. There should be devotion in senators to serve the people of the country.”

MQM leader Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said: “Horse Trading has been observed in previous senate elections. PTI will be the most affected political party in upcoming senate elections. Some other parties having forward block in provincial assemblies could also be affected. PM chaired a meeting of parliamentary leaders to ensure transparency in Senate Elections today. But the parties that have not focused on development works in their constitutions could lose seats in senate elections.”

PTI leader Hamid-ul-Haq Khalil said: “PM chaired a APC regarding constitution amendment to ensure transparency in upcoming senate elections. PTI and the government are on one page on this issue. There will be an improvement in political relations between PTI and PML-N, if government succeeds to stop Horse Trading in senate elections. PTI has majority in KPK assembly so our party deserves some seats in senate. All the members of PTI in KPK assembly will definitely vote for PTI’s candidates in senate elections.”

PPP leader Nouman Islam Sheikh said: “All political parties are agreed that chances of Horse Trading and corruption in upcoming elections should be eliminated. Senate elections should be transparent. In point of view, the constitutional amendment regarding Horse Trading should have been made a lot earlier.”
