Pakistan has urged Afghan parties and the world community to seize the opportunity of recent moves towards reconciliation in Afghanistan to help promote durable peace in the war-torn country.

Pakistan's Permanent Envoy to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi was speaking in a debate on the situation in Afghanistan at the 15 member UN Security Council.

She said that Pakistan would assist the process and it would continue to do what it can to support all efforts to launch a credible peace process.

Maleeha Lodhi said the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr had seen scenes of reconciliation between those who for years had fought a bloody war.

She said the ceasefire by the Taliban demonstrated that its leadership has control of the movement and is cohesive enough to negotiate a political settlement.

Maleeha Lodhi said Pakistan has all along advocated for a negotiated settlement, which was the only viable solution to end the conflict.

On the occasion, Afghan Ambassador Mahmoud Saikal said the success hinged on managing future ceasefires and ensuring implementation of the Afghanistan-Pakistan action plan.
