Indian writers, poets and intellectuals continue to return their national awards to the Indian government in protest against growing extremism in India.

Acclaimed Indian poet and essayist Jayant Mahapatra has returned Padma Shri award to the government in protest against growing intolerance in the country.

According to Indian media, Jayant Mahapatra, in a letter to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, said he wants to raise voice against the growing moral asymmetry in the country. He said freedom is being curtailed in the country.

Pidma Shri award is the fourth highest civilian award in India.

Many other writers, intellectuals and filmmakers have already returned their national awards to the Indian government for its silence over the extremism by Hindus.
