US signals likely delay in troop exit from Afghanistan
U.S. Defence Secretary says Obama is considering a number of options to reinforce US support for President Ghani's security strategy
The U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter says his country is seriously considering slowing the pace of a troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He was speaking at a joint news conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul. Carter said President Obama is considering a number of options to reinforce US support for President Ghani's security strategy, including possible changes to the timeline for drawdown of US troops.
He said apart from troop numbers, the United States and its allies would need to make long-term commitments in resources, equipment and other support to ensure the success of the Afghan forces.
