World Music Day celebrated
June 21, 2021

World Music Day was celebrated across the world today (Monday).

This year theme of the Day is 'Music at the intersections'.

It marks the beginning of summer solstice - the longest day of the year.

World Music Day originated in France in 1980s, but was first proposed by by American artiste Joel Cohen back in 1976 to mark summer solstice.

More than 120 countries commemorate this day as people organise free public concerts in parks, stadiums, and public places, mostly for music lovers and learners.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restricting activities this year, people are more likely to celebrate World Music Day virtually at home.
