Experts urge global community to put end to Indian violations of Indus Water treaty
May 21, 2018

Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi (IR expert):

India is continuously violating the Indus Water treaty of 1960.  Kishanganga is not only the single project pursued by India but it also manipulates the water flow of three rivers of Pakistan for agricultural and energy production purposes. The global community and Word Bank should play their effective role to stop India from the implementation of such projects that cause danger to Pakistani rivers. India has also started several other projects that will be completed in a decade. Pakistan should take Indian aggressive postures very seriously and raise its concerns at all global and international forums.

Dr Muhammad Khan (IR expert):

Indus is a major river system in South Asia and the only water source for Pakistan. It is great threat for Pakistan that India is building water reservoirs on our rivers. Water gets increasingly scarce in Pakistan that can cause droughts. Pakistan being an agricultural country is totally dependent on waters of the Indus Basin Rivers. Agriculture is the backbone of its economy with a share of 21 per cent in GDP. Pakistan should raise objections to the construction of Wuller Barrage, Baghliar Dam and Kishanganga Hydro Electric Power Project maintaining that these projects vitiated the clauses of the Treaty.
