The 100-member US Senate will decide on whether to convict the president and remove him from office on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. There could also be votes to dismiss the trial outright.

After the hearing senators will be given a full day to deliberate before they vote on President Trump's conviction.

For only the third time in history, an American president is facing an impeachment trial.
